WASHINGTON, November 21, 2014 — “There’s two kinds of people in this world,” says Will Smith in the movie trailer for Focus. “There’s hammers and nails. You decide which one you want to be.” That is an interesting way to categorize humanity, but we could add another kind of person to the list: people who watch the “hammer and nails”. Hammers are those who oppress others to gain and stay in control; nails are the people who are victimized by them, people who often wish only for equality and freedom. Hammers — terrorist groups like ISIS and governments that of Bahrain — pound on on the innocent inhabitants of their states as though they are nails in a workshop.  

Oil Dependency

WASHINGTON, October 17, 2014 — In the aftermath of Western exuberance over the Arab Spring, the United States has shown that the thirst for oil dominates is policy agenda. Washington’s need for petroleum from countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar is blinding policy makers to human rights and democratic concerns across the Middle East. American dream of freedom and democracy has motivated and attracted millions of immigrants to our country. Our policy toward democracy is bright and clear. As a result of the forefather’s enlightened thinking, we now enjoy the freedoms granted by the first amendment. As history witnesses so many people dedicated their lives, in order to spread the concept of democracy.

WASHINGTON, September 16, 2014 — According to CNN, on Wednesday September 10th, 2014, United States president Barak Obama asked Congress “to authorize to arm and train moderate Syrian opposition forces to fight ISIS.” This is a critical decision for the United States and Congress, as there is little guarantee these weapons will successfully reach “moderate” members of the Syrian opposition or that they will remain out of the hands of terrorist groups. There are multiple unclear points that need to be discussed when talking about aiding Syrian opposition groups.

January 1st 2014 Broken Promises The situation in Bahrain is a clear example of how human’s blood is viewed less important than oil, power, and political interest. For the last three years, the government of Bahrain has carried out systematic persecution of the Shia community in this country, yet the media outlets and governments are silent. The government views the Shia majority as a threat to the continued power and control held by the Al-Khalifa family.

WASHINGTON, September 15, 2014 — For activists and others who are in prison due to their desire for freedom, September 15 is International Democracy day. In the year 2007, the United Nations General Assembly resolved to observe this particular day as the International Day of Democracy. The purpose of promoting such a subject was to introduce the principle of democracy to the world, inviting nations to contribute to this concept by bringing democracy to their country.

WASHINGTON, September 4, 2014 — A number of Middle Eastern presidents, kings and despots have had a western education. What has that education done for them?

Education and experience are two sides of one coin: It takes both to succeed in life.

Education is the foundation of understanding, acceptance and respect of one for another without any condition. The right education grants the knowledge to not only provide an income, but also to shape our lives and our interactions with others. Education shapes minds; a good education makes us better human beings, people who can work in civilized societies and help those around them.

While a good education can shape good human beings, a bad or dishonest education can make us worse. What kind of education have national leaders received in the west?

The King of Bahrain studied at America’s Command and General Staff College and at The Leys School in Cambridge, England. He experienced the freedoms protected in the United Kingdom and the United States. He lived in an open society with free speech and a free press. Yet he fails to trust his own people with the freedoms he experienced here.

Given the opportunity for a liberating western education, King Hamad did not internalize the importance of freedom and human rights to take back to his country. Bahrainis are under brutal attack by their government. Many cases of killing, torture and rape have been recorded in Bahrain by human rights organizations such as Human rights watch, Amnesty International and Shia rights watch.

King Hamad seems to be consciously inflicting torture on the east. He refuses to endorse the basic rights he experienced in the west to his own people. He ignores the principles of leadership taught in the West which call for him to respect his people and allow them a say in their government. Instead he imposes the forms of oppression common in the region’s history.

Syrian president Bashar al-Assad also studied abroad. He did postgraduate study at the Western Eye Hospital in London. He has a better understanding of Western culture and freedom through his half-British wife. Although the opposition movement in Syria was hijacked by terrorist groups such as the al-Nusra Front and Islamic state of Iraq and al Sham (ISIS), in its early stages he could have resolved many issues before they exploded into civil war.

The kings of Qatar and United Arab Emirates, two countries with a history of funding terrorist groups, graduated from  the British Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Former Emir of Qatar and Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyana both received a Western education and experienced many rights before they become leaders at home and suppressed their people.

While many countries fail to educate their people, other nations replace education with fabricated teachings of Islam. Many Islamic schools teach close-mindedness to their students, brainwashing them into extremism. The Al-Azhar University in Cairo was founded in 970 or 972 to teach the Qur’an and Islamic law. Al-Azhar intended to be the center of a growing community of scholars who would promote the message of Peace in the world.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way. Graduates from that university end up with radical and extremist ideologies; they promote human rights abuse and targeted killings. Yusuf al-Qaradawi, 87, is an example of an Al-Azhar graduate. The U.K. and U.S. have banned him from visiting because of his promotion of violence against innocent people. Al-Qaradawi was a principal shareholder and a Sharia advisor of Bank al-Taqwa, a bank that the U.S and the UN associate with financing al-Qaeda.

There are other “scholars” like al-Qaradawi who have have the blood of innocent people, such as Shia Muslims, on their hands. In recent months, Al-Azhar has banned its students from connections or associations with Shia Muslims, further showing its sectarian face. Shafi Alajmi, a Kuwaiti scholar, is another extremist who has a record of hate speeches against Shia Muslims. In a June, 2013 speech in front of the embassy of Lebanon, he admitted ordering the slaughter of Sayed Mousawi, a Shia Muslim scholar, and his wife and two daughters in the town of Hatla, Syria.

Despite his admission of responsibility, the government of Kuwait has failed to hold Alajmi accountable for the murder. In a television interview, Alajmi said that he is collecting and sending money to Syrian extremists to buy weapons for foreign fighters. Despite his open support of terrorists, there has yet to be any foreign or domestic intervention.

The misinterpretation of islamic law has fueled the growing hatred and abuse of Shia Muslims in the Middle East. Leaders fail to react to the growing sectarianism endorsed by the western schools they attended. Not only do they fail to guide their people, but they also neglect to uphold punishment to those advocating extremism. Their governments deny their citizens basic freedoms, despite their life and educational experience in the west.

So far Western and Islamic educational institutions have failed to create true leaders who care for and protect those they lead. Most of our leaders lack the needed leadership skills to end inhumane treatment of their people. In fact many of them are the ones fueling terror and discrimination.

Maybe now is a perfect time for all educational centers and schools to evaluate their work. If the people they’ve educated are human rights violators, have these schools done what they intended to do?

ISIS beyond a terrorist group, beyond humanity

WASHINGTON, September 2, 2014 – President Obama’s defense secretary Chuck Hagel, call the ISIS and ISIL “sophisticated and well-funded, they are beyond terrorist group”.

This comes after the attack of the town Senjar, Iraq which is mainly populated with Izadies, and the warning of the United Nation toward the “massacre” in the city of Amerli, the mainly Shia Turkmen who are under siege of ISIS. Children, women and men are left without having even small portion of food to survive.

There are a couple concept that are missing in Secretary Hagel’s statement regarding the bloody and inhumane terrorist group ISIS. Unfortunately we are not studying the basic steps of creation, funding and training of this terrorist group.

ISIS was established in Syria around 2012 with the separation of the most extremist terrorist expelled from Jabhat al-Nusra in Syria. Many might know the Jabhat al-Nusra was created by countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar and were trained in military camps in Turkey and Jordan.

For those who have traveled to different countries or know the language, it is not hard to recognize that a large number of ISIS commanders have a Saudi Arabian Accent.

For example, in the video published on YouTube where an ISIS commander tells Shia hostages to say ISIS is great to avoid execution, the commander has a Saudi accent. In the video, several ISIS members then go behind the Shia and execute them. The executioners also have Saudi accents.

Saudi influence, combined with the wealth of kings and religious leaders, have encouraged foreigners to join the ISIS fight. These leaders include Mohammad Al Arifi in Saudi Arabia wand Shafi Al Ajami, a preacher and serving assistant dean of The Kuwait University college of Sharia in Kuwait.

Secretary Hagel mentioned in a press conference streamed on Fox News that we have to be prepared for everything. Well Mr. Secretary, preparation comes by not closing our eyes to the funds and weapons being delivered by the aforementioned countries to terrorist groups.

In order to bring peace and democracy to the region, the United States needs to cut the supplies to the terrorist groups. This could come by:

  • Identifying leaders who are exploiting the hopelessness of foreign Muslims and encouraging them to join the fight in Iraq and Syria.
  • Preventing the funding of the terrorist groups and stopping aid from neighboring countries.
  • Monitoring humanitarian aid with the help of United Nations and ensuring it is distributed fairly and equally.
  • Training and providing security to the populations surrounded by terrorist groups, such as Senjar, Amerli.

This is the best time for United States to prove that the technology and American dream is achievable. We are one nation and we have to prove to the people that humanity matters to us and we do what it takes to defend rights of people in need.

You might ask why “Shia Sentinel?” For many years, I was an injured and heartbroken child who ran away from his motherland, in hopes of starting a new journey. My goal since I got to the United States was to study, create my own company, and earn top money. However, the more I progressed in my education and interacted with people of different worlds, I came to realize that, in fact, I was not the only person who had spent a healthy portion of their life under terror. There were others like me, except, some had never received the chance to escape the violent conditions I too had experienced. I was blessed with opportunity, and they were left to bear the injustice that continued. With the unleashed chaos of the Arab Spring, all that I had created a new life upon was turned upside down. Seeing and hearing what the media showed and what social media depicted enticed flashbacks to my child. All that fear and turmoil I had turned back to was now flashing across my mind. Yet again, I was the heartbroken child awakened by the sound of gunshots below our apartment window. Except this time, what was being said on the news was not what I knew to be true. The violence depicted as consequence of religion was not what I was raised to believe. Lies were being used as shrouds to cover the crimes of leaders, unworthy of their positions. It was a though media was handed a lens which showed only what was politically beneficial. People of minority status were being used as shields for corruption and abuse. Thousands were killed, raped, tortured, and yet, there was no mention of them in the news.    At the time, I was working as a journalist for Freemuslim Association, inc, and with all that I had witness, I took an oath to do whatever I can to protect the most innocent religion in the world. Since I start working for Shia Rights I realized there is a lot to get done. That’s why I decided to dedicate my life toward being a watchdog for all the inhumane action against Shia Muslims. I may not have initially set out to do the job, but deep inside me there is something told me: You can do it; You have to. And so, years later, I have dedicated my life, my “american dream” for the sake of the world's “democratic dream”.

Thessa Lageman 15 August 2014   The relationship between Sunnis and Shiites has reached a low point in many countries. According to Shia Rights Watch, more than 80 Shiites are killed every day in the Middle East. Why has this fourteen-hundred-year-old conflict flared up? Over the centuries, Sunnis and Shiites have usually lived together peacefully, next to each other and sometimes with each other under one roof. But violent conflicts between the two sects are unfortunately not unusual and because the Shiites have always been in the minority, they have often been the victims. As a result of the wars in Syria and Iraq, tensions between the two groups are now rising again in the Middle East and even in Europe and other parts of the world. “Discrimination and oppression of Shiites is increasing because of the anti-Shiite propaganda that is being distributed with financial support from Saudi Arabia”, said Mustafa Akhwand, executive director of Shia Rights Watch. This organisation was founded in Washington in 2011 to defend the rights of Shia Muslims worldwide and to counter increasing discrimination, hatred, oppression and violence against Shiites. Caliph The split between Sunnis and Shiites emerged from a conflict over who was to be the successor of the Prophet Mohammed after his death in 632. The Sunnis believed that any devout Muslim could become the leader or Caliph of the Muslims, while the Shiites believed that God had reserved this position for Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet, and his descendants. Ali's adherents were given the name ‘party of Ali’, shi'at Ali or Shiites. The other group were the Sunnis, those who follow the habits of the Prophet. Later, dogmatic differences also arose between the movements, though Sunnis and Shiites largely follow the same religious ideas: the five pillars of Islam, the Koran and the belief that Mohammed was the last Prophet. Some Hadiths, the stories about the Prophet, are interpreted differently, just like certain parts of sharia, or Islamic law. There are several branches of Shiism, such as the Alevi in Turkey, the Alawites in Syria and the Druze in Lebanon. Sunni Islam has its own branches: among others, the conservative Wahabi and Salafi in Saudi Arabia. Propaganda Approximately 10 to 20 percent of the around one and a half billion Muslims today are Shiites. In Iraq, Iran, Bahrain and Azerbaijan, they form the majority of the population. Large groups of Shiites also live in Syria, Lebanon, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. “Every Shia Muslim who lives in Arab countries faces Anti-Shiism one way or another”, said Mustafa Akhwand. He himself has lived in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran and now in the United States. “Each country had their own special ways to discriminate against me and my family because of our religion.” According to him, false propaganda from their governments makes some Sunnis afraid of Shiites. “When you tell the ordinary Sunni that you are Shia, the first thing that comes to their mind is that you are ‘kefir’ (infidel). Sunni and Wahhabi scholars, with the help of their governments, brainwash their people to make them believe Shia are infidels and they worship a different God.” Twitter followers Some of these conservative religious leaders spread anti-Shia hate propaganda via YouTube, social media and television stations, such as Safa TV and Wesal TV, which are funded by Saudi Arabia. They call Shiism a heresy ‘worse than Christianity or Judaism’ and call for a holy war between Sunnis and Shiites. Some of them have millions of followers on Twitter, such as Nabil Alawadhy (4.5 million followers), a Kuwaiti cleric who hosted a religious programme that, in addition to being anti-Shiite, was also critical of the Kuwaiti State. For that reason, Kuwait recently revoked his citizenship. Mustafa Akhwand points to the danger of this type of propaganda against Shiites: “A few years ago a fatwa was issued stating that killing Americans in Iraq or Shia Muslims will take you to heaven. And now the ISIS orders their soldiers to kill Shia men and rape their women.” In Egypt, where Shiites make up only 2 percent of the population, Mohamed Zoghbi called for the destruction of the Shiites in a sermon televised in May of last year. A month later, four Shiites, including an imam, were lynched in broad daylight in an Egyptian village. Akhwand: “This shows how terrorist groups are influenced by their scholars.”   Anti-Sunni Islam Anti-Sunni propaganda also exists on social media and on Shiite Iranian TV channels. In Iran – as in Iraq after the government’s fall in 2003 – the Sunni minority, which makes up only 10 percent of the population, is discriminated against and disadvantaged. Although Christian churches are tolerated, the millions of Sunnis in Tehran do not have their own mosque, are often unemployed and cannot reach top positions in their fields. The Director of Shia Rights Watch responds: “The treatment of Shias towards Sunnis is not even comparable to how Sunnis are treating Shias in their nations.”   According to Akhwand, the tensions between Sunnis and Shiites got especially out of hand after the fall of Saddam Hussein. To the displeasure of neighbouring countries, a Shiite government came to power in Iraq. King Abdullah of Jordan and the former Egyptian president Mubarak feared that a ‘Shia crescent’, a power bloc of Shia from Lebanon and Syria via Iraq and Iran to Bahrain, would come to pass. Sectarian apartheid and minorities For political reasons, Arab rulers have often emphasised the ‘Shiite danger’, the risk that the Shiite minorities would revolt and that the power of Iran, Syria, Iraq and Hezbollah in Lebanon would grow. The Bahraini Royal family – Sunnis who reign over a population that is two-thirds Shiite – claimed that Iran was behind the revolt in Bahrain in 2011, but there was never any evidence found to support that claim. In Bahrain, as in Saudi Arabia, a kind of sectarian apartheid against Shiites exists: for example, they cannot reach high positions in government, the military or the police. To counter the feared spread of Shiism from Syria, Saudi Arabia and Qatar support the Sunni rebels of the Free Syrian Army. For the same reason, Kuwaiti nationals are the largest financers of the Sunni jihad fighters. Meanwhile, Iran and Russia still support the Alawite-led Syrian government and thousands of Shiites are fighting with it on the side of the Syrian government army to protect Shiite shrines against destruction by Sunni extremists. So what began in 2011 as a fight for more freedom and better living conditions has become a dire and hopeless international and sectarian conflict. Shiites and other minorities, such as Christians and Yazidis, have become victims of the fights in Syria and Iraq, especially after the recent, successful advance of the IS (Islamic State), formerly known as the ISIS (Islamic State in Syria and Iraq). Mustafa Akhwand believes that Al Azhar University in Cairo, the main authority in Sunni Islam, should condemn the murders of Shiites and explain that the followers of the ISIS and similar violent groups are not Muslims. “Why don’t they do that? Shia scholars such as Sistani and Shirazi not only condemn the killings, they also send help to Yazidis, Christians and Sunnis in Iraq and Syria.”   Good neighbours The Director of Syria Rights Watch is not optimistic about the future. “The future of the Shia is like its past. The Shia willed be killed as long as they exist.” But he also says: “The only solution is to awaken the Sunni population, show them that they don’t have to be afraid of Shia and that they can be good neighbours.” Despite everything, self-confidence among Shiites is increasing, according to Akhwand: “In the past, Shia Muslims feared prosecution, so they never declared that they are Shia Muslims. But now with more attention for their cause in the media, from human right groups and even the United Nations, more Shia are coming forward, which is why you see the population of Shia increasing (for example, in Egypt).” He adds: “Shia are not silent anymore. We are finding ways to raise our voices and take our rights peacefully.”
